Out of District & Online Courses
Interested in taking an out of district course?
UPDATE as of June 9th:
The App C submission window for COURSE ADVANCEMENT or FIRST ATTEMPT has closed. RHS accepted requests for these courses through June 6th.
Current RHS students who would like to submit an App C request for GRADE IMPROVEMENT may submit the App C document directly to their school counselor via email. Only App C requests for grade improvement from current RHS students will be reviewed. Students must submit their request by June 24th.
Students, if you are interested in completing an out of district course for credit, please review the important information below. An Appendix C must be submitted and approved before you begin your out of district course. Once you have reviewed the information below, click on your graduation year for specific additional information that specifically applies to your graduation year. Then, you will be able to access the Appendix C document and directions for submission and review.
Appendix C Guidance and Directions for ALL Students:
- Students may request to use credits from other programs to meet LWSD graduation requirements. These programs can be public schools outside the district, accredited private schools, or programs offering non-college credit at colleges.
- This is not an exhaustive list, but a tool to help identify out of district course providers/offerings: Online Learning Course Catalog
- Appropriate situations when an out of district course may be requested:
- Course cannot be taken at home high school because of scheduling conflict.
- Course cannot be taken at home high school because the class is not offered at home high school.
- Student would like to accelerate in a non-grade specific level subject area:
- Math
- World language
- Out of district courses taken for acceleration will only be approved one at a time. Students may not take two out of district courses at the same time for acceleration. Once an accelerated out of district course is complete and the grade report is shared with LWSD, student may initiate request for next accelerated out of district credit.
- Student would like to complete an out of district course for grade improvement.
- Example: Student completed Algebra 2 at their home high school and earned a D in semester 1. The student may choose to retake Algebra 2 semester 1 through an out of district provider and have the letter grade earned from the out of district class posted on their LWSD transcript.
- Out of district courses identified as “credit recovery” are not appropriate for grade improvement.
- The initial grade earned for the course will not be deleted from the LWSD transcript. The initial earned credit will be zeroed out and instead, credit will be issued by the out of district retake, therefore allowing the grade earned via the course retake will impact the GPA instead of the initial grade.
- When taking a course for grade improvement, the student must take the SAME course/semester through the selected out of district provider.
- Example: Student completed Algebra 2 at their home high school and earned a D in semester 1. The student may choose to retake Algebra 2 semester 1 through an out of district provider and have the letter grade earned from the out of district class posted on their LWSD transcript.
- Inappropriate situations when an out of district course will not be approved:
- The course fits into the student’s home high school schedule and is offered at their home high school.
- High school student schedules prioritize and include core subject areas (English, Math, Science, Social Studies) and specific graduation requirements to keep the student on track for high school graduation and to align with their post high school plans.
- For reference, 2025-2026 RHS Course Catalog: LWSD Course Catalog
- For reference, LWSD graduation credit requirements: High School Guide - Lake Washington School District
- High school student schedules prioritize and include core subject areas (English, Math, Science, Social Studies) and specific graduation requirements to keep the student on track for high school graduation and to align with their post high school plans.
- Students may only accelerate in courses that do not have a particular grade level attached to the course sequence. For example, students are expected to take specific English and Social Studies courses each year of high school. Requesting an out of district course for these subject areas is not appropriate.
- Example: Students cannot accelerate through English 10 over the summer and then enroll in English 11 as a sophomore.
- Students that would like to drop a class from their home high school schedule and instead take the class through an out of district provider
- Students are required to be enrolled in a full-time schedule at their home high school to access out of district credits (6/6 classes for 9-11 graders, 5/6 classes for 12 graders)
- The course fits into the student’s home high school schedule and is offered at their home high school.
Submitting the Appendix C:
- Carefully review the Appendix C document page 2, “Important information for families and students”.
- The Appendix C must be submitted as an attachment through the Microsoft Form below.
- When filling out the Appendix C request, the 4 year plan on page 3 does not need to be completed if the student is requesting to take an out of district course for grade improvement.
- Appendix C requests will be accepted through 6/6/25. After this date, Appendix C requests will not be accepted/reviewed until the 2025-26 school year.
- RHS staff will communicate with students via their LWSD email account to share approval or rejection notice of the submitted Appendix C form.
- Once the form is submitted, you can expect a response in 5-10 business days, if not sooner.
- Students that are completing an out of district course with the intention of accelerating in a subject for the coming school year must have their course completed and the official transcript sent to RHS by 8/15/25. This will allow RHS staff to process and review transcripts and update student RHS course placement for the 2025-26 school year as necessary.
- Example: A current 9th grade student wants to take Geometry over the summer to accelerate in math and take Algebra 2 Honors in 10th grade. The out of district transcript for the completed 1.0 Geometry credit must be sent to RHS by 8/15/25.
How to submit transcript to RHS:
- Request the out of district institution send an official electronic transcript to: RHSCounseling@schedule.lwsd.org (preferred method)
- Or have the out of district institution send an official paper copy of your transcript to:
Redmond High School- Counseling Office
17272 NE 104th St
Redmond, WA 98052
RHS staff will review transcripts received over summer when we are back in the building in late August and make appropriate 25-26 schedule changes at that time.
- Any transcript received from an out of district provider will be reviewed by the RHS Data Processor and added to the student’s LWSD transcript, presuming an approved Appendix C for the course is on file.
Below, identify your graduation year and click to read more important information about the Appendix C procedures that apply specifically to your graduation year. A link to the Appendix C document and directions for submission and review can be found below under each graduation year.
Additional Out-of-District Credit Considerations
YEAR-LONG COMMITMENT: Registration at RHS is a year-long commitment and students will not be allowed to switch classes because their grade doesn't meet their expectations. Once the school year begins, schedules are final. Additional online classes will not advance/change your schedule mid-year.
REGISTRATION: During course registration for the 2025-26 school year, every student MUST register for the next course in the sequence. Once their transcript is received from their out of district provider in August, the student’s schedule will then be changed to the next course.
FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Families are responsible for paying for the out of district course and paying for any associated fees.
