LWSD honors Operation School Bell, Redmond High School student at WASA Community Awards Luncheon

Each year, Lake Washington School District (LWSD) participates in the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) Region 110 Awards. Each school district within a region can recognize a “WASA Student Leadership Award” and a “Community Leadership Award.” Awardees were honored during a regional luncheon on Friday, May 16, and again by the LWSD school board during their meeting on Monday, May 19.

This year, LWSD selected:

Community Leadership Award: Assistance League of the Eastside - Operation School Bell
Operational School Bell is designed to provide funds to students in need. Students are able to shop at their local Fred Meyer stores for essentials like clothing, shoes, books, school supplies, medications and groceries. School personnel carefully select the students who receive support in Lake Washington, Bellevue and Northshore School Districts. Operation School Bell helps children feel confident, fit in with their peers and have the tools they need to thrive academically. New clothes, a warm coat or a book of their own help to foster self-esteem and give students the foundation for a brighter future.

WASA Student Leadership Award: Viswa Karthic, senior, Redmond High School (RHS)
Viswa has served on the RHS Safety Committee for four years and is the first student to ever serve on the LWSD Safety Advisory Council. He has served as the voice of students regarding safety in our district. Viswa has worked to bring Stop the Bleed kits and training to LWSD as well as trained RHS staff in hands on CPR. Outside of RHS, he serves as a Redmond Police Explorer and completed an EMT program. His contributions to our school and community have made us all a little bit safer.
